Residential Accommodation
Discover how our residential properties provide 24-hour person-centred support in a warm, family-style environment.
At Acorn Village, our purpose-built houses provide a safe and welcoming home for adults with learning disabilities. Each residence is designed to feel homely and comfortable, offering the right balance of independence and support.
Our dedicated, long-serving support workers take the time to truly understand every individual’s needs, providing personal care with compassion and respect. Residents are encouraged to build friendships, share experiences, and be part of a close-knit community where everyone belongs.
Living at Acorn means more than just a place to stay – it’s a chance to thrive in a caring environment, develop independence, and enjoy life to the full.
All service users have the choice to remain at Acorn Village if they develop a terminal illness and/or have reached the natural end of their life.
Each of our homes have the ability to provide sensitive and compassionate end of life care to their service users with support from the community health teams such as their GP, SinglePoint, district nurses and/or other specialists who may be involved with their diagnosis.
When appropriate, end of life plans are developed alongside service user’s family members and other key individuals to ensure essential information is captured early enough to support the decision making and planning process.

Staffing
Each residential property is manned by a 24/7 core team of Care Support Workers who are led by their own Home Manager and Deputy Manager.
Residential staff baselines are continually reviewed in line with changes to need and when care packages are increased or decreased.
Home Managers are line managed and supervised through the Care Management Team.
Quality assurance is assessed through the Care Management Team who set and review actions for ongoing compliance and to ensure high quality outcomes are being achieved.
A two tier on-call service provides continuous oversight of the care services and is responsive to emergency situations. This mechanism also ensures a senior manager is always available outside of normal business hours for advice and support.
Acorn's Senior Management and a group of trustees have an active role within the care services holding their own sub-committee meetings with key members of staff and periodically visit our homes to speak with staff and service users, and observe their own quality assurance.
Daytime Activities
All service users are supported to develop a personal plan of activities that they can enjoy each week alongside their support workers. Activities to meet individual choices and preferences are wide ranging and help to promote good physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, develop new skills and maintain previous abilities.
Trampolining, swimming, gym, horse riding, bowling, college courses, being part of local community groups, going to church, sailing and many more activities are enjoyed throughout the year by our service users.
There are on-site opportunities within our purpose-built Day Service and Therapeutic Centre, including activities such as art, craft and weaving which are supported by skilled staff looking to explore and develop individual creativity. People with specific interests are encouraged and supported to achieve their goals using these interests as focus points. Gardening, cooking, life skills and drama sessions are also well attended.
An additional life skills and cooking area has been developed, named the Strover Centre. This area houses a specially adapted kitchen and a fully accessible bathroom/ changing room.
Through a Heritage Lottery grant, an apple press room has been created and has also provided funds to create a fully accessible kitchen garden which overlooks fields and can be enjoyed by all. Service users also access educational opportunities at adult education centres.
Relaxation is not forgotten; a therapeutic sensory room has been developed and pop-up events/activities are provided throughout the year to encourage socialisation, meeting new people or friends, to have fun and to continue to develop social skills.
All possibilities are explored with new activities and sessions constantly being developed. Acorn Village's Day Services are also open to people who have a learning disability but live in the wider community so there is a further opportunity to meet new people and make further friends.
The Walled Garden Café onsite is a lovely additional facility and is open to people living and working at Acorn Village and the general public, thus offering the space for integration with the wider community.
Finally, work experience opportunities for people with a learning disability are being developed and are currently available within the café, onsite charity shop and on reception.
